Lanny Choong

Made for Client — Traditional Qi Pao 傳統旗袍

Classic lines refined with considered proportion, structure and movement.

Brief

Lanny, a former client of A Shirt by Adam Liew, visited the atelier to try on the brand’s signature qi pao collar white shirt. She came with her daughter, Carmen, and during the appointment, the conversation naturally turned towards wedding dressing.

When Carmen asked whether Adam designed wedding dresses, Lanny later shared that she was looking for a qi pao for the Chinese morning ceremony and marriage certificate signing.

As the mother of the bride, the brief called for a traditional qi pao that felt graceful, ceremonial and respectful to the occasion — elegant enough to honour her role, while remaining measured and not overpowering the bride.

Solution

Adam designed the qi pao around Lanny’s complexion, body shape and the wedding’s lilac colour theme. An Italian duchess satin was recommended for its structure, allowing the garment to hold a clean and composed silhouette.

The side pleat was carefully developed to create balance through the midsection, giving the body a smoother and more elongated visual line. A custom French embroidered lace design by Adam Liew was added to bring refinement and delicacy, without making the piece feel overly dramatic.

The final qi pao complemented Lanny’s skin tone, supported her proportions and gave her a poised presence for both the Chinese morning ceremony and certificate signing. It was a piece shaped through tradition, fit and quiet celebration.
